Preppy College Dorm Room Tour

I’ve been meaning to do this post since August when I first moved in, but I’ve never had a room this clean since the initial move in! Honestly, the only reason there isn’t a bag thrown on the floor or a sock somewhere in these photos is because my mom came up this past weekend for Mom’s Weekend with my sorority. So while my room might look somewhat like #goals currently, it’s definitely not that way all the time!

I have the Peyton bedding in Royal Navy from Pottery Barn Teen and I absolutely love it. (It’s on sale in the pink and light pool colors!)  My all-time favorite color scheme involves some variation of coral, turquoise, and navy, so this was a perfect way to combine them. I also have a long body pillow in coral (on the left). My roommate Jordan and I are in the same sorority, Alpha Delta Pi, so we hung our flag from bid day up over the window.

I have this strand of photo clips from Urban Outfitters that’s been great for hanging photos without sticking holes in the wall. Before college, I printed out a ton of photos from Mpix and I definitely recommend using them for printing photos! The tea towel of Lawrence is from Tammy Smith Design–it came in a print version too,  but I like having the bigger size of the tea towel to hang for decoration. She has a ton of cute drawings of other cities as well and if you’re from a big city area, that’d be a great way to have a little piece of home in your dorm.

I used washi tape to put up the photos on my wall and the majority of them have stayed up since August. The two canvases on the left are from my friend Abby (top) and my big diamond sister Mackenzie (bottom). I painted the ‘h’ canvas myself. In the space under the canvases on the left, I had a Hogwarts travel poster (this one is similar), but it fell from the command strip recently for some reason! On my desk I have a lamp with two outlets on it (which has definitely come in handy), my alarm clock, a couple decorations, and a plastic organizer from Target with 3 drawers to hold my jewelry.

Under my bed I have a butterfly chair, another organizer with 3 drawers to hold some random craft stuff, my dresser (provided by my dorm), and some more boxes on top to hold random things that don’t have a specific category to them. I also have a shoe hanging organizer to hold random things like command strips and nail polish.

The majority of these have come in handy, but I definitely didn’t need it all. Keep an eye out for an updated post of my college dorm essentials!

Thursday Threes

It’s only been two weeks since my last post, but a lot has happened! I’m currently on spring break and while I’m not relaxing by a beach or exploring a new city, I’m happy to be home with my family. Here’s an update on what’s been going on lately.

ONE

I got accepted into the design school! My parents encouraged me to apply last minute (literally 6 hours before the application was due) and I just learned that I’ll be starting in the fall. I’ll be double majoring in strategic communications in the journalism school and graphic design (visual communications design if you want to be fancy) in the design school. I’ve been interested in the idea of pairing the two with creative advertising or working in the magazine industry lately, so I think this is a perfect fit for me. Plus, there are several amazing and innovative ad agencies in the area that I would love to move forward with a possible internship come junior or senior year.

I updated my portfolio website to a cleaner, more colorful design. I’d love to upgrade my blog website to a WordPress domain with a customizable website, but right now I feel like I don’t have the time! A summer project might be in the works.

I can’t say a lot about this yet (I want it to be a surprise) but here’s a not-so-subtle hint with the picture! Keep an eye out for a future collaboration.

College is no fun

Second semester only started in late January, but I already feel like I’ve done a ton of things since then. While my classes have hardly started getting into the real projects, I’ve been committing myself to making videos throughout the semester to keep my family and friends updated on what I’m doing. Plus, if YouTube is still around by the time I have kids, it’ll be a cool thing to look back on and show them my college experience.

On January 30th, the Jayhawks played Kentucky in basketball and College Gameday on ESPN chose to come to Allen Fieldhouse to host their show. It was really cool to see all the behind-the-scenes production, and my group got to be on TV several times and meet Jay Bilas (because one of my friends had a great sign that he wanted a picture with). Once it got to game time, everyone was already hyped up from College Gameday and the atmosphere was incredible. (Even though I think the Oklahoma game with 3 OTs over winter break was better, this was a close second!) At one point, the Fieldhouse hit 120 decibels–for reference, a jet takes off at 100 decibels. Be sure to watch the video in HD.

On Friday, I went to Snow Creek with my sorority sisters. While I wasn’t about to trust myself with skiing for the first time, going tubing was definitely fun and I think it’d be cool to make the trip back at some point. It’s not every day that you can go skiing in the middle of Missouri.

Thanks for watching/reading!

xoxo Hannah

One down, seven to go

I’m sure I’m not the first to say it… But college is much harder than I expected.

As I finish my first semester of freshman year, I have a lot to think about. Like the fact that I came to KU with expectations of a 4.0 GPA (if only I knew), or the fact that I came to college with a set idea of what college would be like, straight from the movies. That scene didn’t happen.

12247717_522337531269056_8097948706815113384_o

But what did happen is probably the best fall I’ve had yet, and I think it can only get better. In just my first semester at the University of Kansas, I’ve:

  • joined a sorority, Alpha Delta Pi, and gained some irreplaceable friends
  • gone to numerous football and basketball games
  • been on the Ellen show
  • started photographing for the Kansan, the school paper
  • volunteered at the Lawrence Humane Society
  • coached a kindergarten soccer team
  • been elected technology chair for ADPi
  • found a bible study for me
  • founded a Spoon University chapter

This first semester has already taught me so much and I can’t wait for more. I think this quote sums up what I’ve learned from college so far:

“Other people’s opinion of you does not have to become your reality.”

Thursday Threes

I’ve been way absent from posting on here lately, partly because college life has been so full of activities and partly because I haven’t been putting it as a main priority. However, I love writing and want to put this blog back in the forefront of my life!

If you’ve been following along on my Instagram you can see all that I’ve been up to lately. In August, I went through recruitment at the University of Kansas and I’m now an Alpha Delta Pi and loving it! The best part about being an ADPi is being able to feel comfortable with all my sisters and at my house.

One: Back in September, I went to Late Night with my sisters from ADPi. Late Night at KU is a pep rally for basketball season and this video showcases how big of a deal basketball is at my school. The picture below is me and my roommate Jordan (and best friend since fourth grade), who’s also in ADPi.

Two: The Ellen Show came to campus! As a long time fan of Ellen this was so cool to be on her show. The Royals (KC’s baseball team!) made it to the World Series for the second year in a row and our fans are incredible, so Ellen chose to send Jeannie and her team to KU for a competition to win tickets to the World Series Game One. You can watch the video here, and if you look each time the camera swings over the crowd you can see my sign. My friends and I had a running joke after this that it’ll be easier for us to get on the Ellen show than to ever go see the Ellen show. You can see me in the picture if you look to the left of the kid in the crown.

Three: Halloween meant the end of a very long homecoming at KU. Homecoming is full of different events to celebrate KU’s tradition and my sorority paired with another fraternity, Alpha Tau Omega, to create a float, a banner, a mural, and participate in several different other competitions. We ended up getting second place and it was worth it. I dressed as Taylor Swift (an easy go-to costume for me) and went out with a few of my friends.

Back To School: Essential Study Kit

Last week I posted about back to school essentials to have in general. This week, in accordance with the organization theme with the Bloggers Back to School, I’m sharing a study kit I got from my grad party from some good friends of mine!

Everyone needs the essentials. Click through to find out my must haves for college. IMG_0617Inside the package is all the little things you wouldn’t think of…until that moment that you need them.IMG_0613Tic Tacs aren’t necessarily considered a study essential, but who doesn’t like having a mint handy anyway? Fun fact: every time I took an assessment in elementary school, my teachers always handed out mints before. They’re actually proven to help boost your memory! If you eat a mint while studying, then eat another right before a test, your brain is more likely to associate that flavor with the topic you’re studying. And hey, whatever works, right?

Along with Tic Tacs, I have command hooks, otherwise known as the holy grail of the dorm. I have three more packs downstairs along with these! A mini stapler always helps, and staples to go along with it are a must have.
IMG_0614

I also have mini post it notes (the rainbow stack). Last year, I found these most helpful for bookmarking different chapters when taking notes so I could flip back and forth. Also included are extra erasers, a pencil sharpener, and the planner girl’s dream: washi tape. I have about 20 something rolls of washi tape now and use them for absolutely everything!
IMG_0615It depends on whether you’re a paper or a digital kind of person, but I know I’ll use push pins or magnets to stick up random things to remember about campus events, like flyers and such. It wouldn’t hurt to stick my A+ paper on the bulletin board for a little motivation as well 😉

Paper clips also work great as bookmarking pages, and the thicker kind of clips are perfect for bigger amounts of papers. Rubber bands are always handy for keeping the little things together until you can find a more permanent repair, and good erasers and lead are essential for the paper-and-pen notetaker.
IMG_0616

More post-it flags! They’re called essentials for a reason. And of course, an array of pens and pencils are always necessary. I prefer Staedtler pens the most, but Papermate Inkjoys come close behind.

Not pictured (aka what wouldn’t fit) is a pair of scissors and a ruler. These will definitely be making a home in my desk as well!

Graduation Party: The Details

As promised, here’s my post with all the details from my graduation party. As we were planning this, we kept making the joke that it was either: A, going to look really cute, or B, look like Pinterest threw up on it. It kind of ended up being a combination of both but I absolutely loved it! If you haven’t already, don’t forget to read my first post about my party featured here.

(Warning: this is about to be a really photo-heavy post.)

All the little details are what makes a graduation party so cute. See more of my party here!Outside we glued these cardstock letters to paint stirrers, stuck them in the ground and added balloons. Having this outside was a huge plus…because I accidentally put the wrong address on the invitation. Oops. All the little details are what makes a graduation party so cute. Graduation Party with Daniel Wellington

I’ve finally graduated high school! One of my favorite parts of graduating was having a party/open house for me and my friend Madie. We’ve been best friends since kindergarten and had plenty of photos to decorate with! I’ll share more pictures of the adorable decorations and everything in a later post, but I wanted to put this up first.

I received this gorgeous watch courtesy of Daniel Wellington a while ago. The pink stripe with the navy is perfect and the watch is amazing quality! (Side note: I was worried about the face size because I’m used to smaller watches, so I went with the small size. It works perfectly and doesn’t feel ‘uncomfortable’ at all!) One of the great things about these watches is the ability to change out the straps. I haven’t bought one yet, but I’m eyeing the Classy Glasgow.

Use the code HANNAHWACAMERA to get 15% off all products at Daniel Wellington until June 15th, 2015! Follow @DW_watches on Pinterest for more. #danielwellingtonI used this tutorial to make the confetti numbers–it was our cake topper!

You Are Bound To Fail

What proceeds is my speech I wrote for commencement, and while I wasn’t selected to speak, I still wanted to share what I wrote, because I believe it’s important for everyone to hear. With high school graduation in a week (no, it hasn’t hit me yet), I’m counting down the days and learning how to cherish the people around me just a little bit more.

Inbox by Gmail Review

There is nothing I love more than Inbox by Gmail.

inbox by gmail

This app/website has become a lifesaver for me. I used to be drowning in emails, mainly promotions and etc, and when I would get an important email it’d be lost instantly.

Inbox by Gmail organizes your emails into bundles. I have a folders called Finances, Updates, Promotions, and Travel that are automatically sorted for me. I also have the ability to bundle emails myself. For example, I have a folder for any email from the University of Kansas. Any time I receive an email from admissions or another department, I click the option to bundle it into the KU folder and any future email from that sender will be automatically sorted. I also have a blogging folder for emails from Smart Girls Group and Her Campus Blogger Network.

Emails that aren’t bundled get sent to the main page of my inbox, which makes it easy to see the important things! The attached documents are also displayed as a small image. When I get my work calendar in an Excel spreadsheet, I can click on the attachment without even opening my email.

Inbox works kind of like a to-do list format. When I’m finished reading an email, I can either delete it or click the check mark to signify that I’m ‘done’ with the email, clearing it from my sight. Don’t worry-you can still see it later! All you have to do is search who the email is from.

Along with the done feature, there’s also an option to ‘pin’ the email. If it’s something you think you might forget but know it’s important, you can click the ‘pin’ button to bring it straight to the front of your inbox. You can also snooze an email. This gives you the option to set a date and time for your email to reappear and give you a reminder to read your email and reply. I don’t use this feature often, but it’s super helpful for when I do!

Currently the only way to get Inbox is to send an email to Google requesting an invite. However, since I already have Inbox, I have the ability to send invites to others! If this sounds like something you’d like to try out, just let me know by commenting below with your email. I’d love to show you how cool it is!
